Why did I write a science fiction adventure novel about the nature of the universe? Because I discovered that asking bigger and broader questions cures anxiety and existential dread. Heavy problems shrink to controllable size when we pose large questions — and easing my agitation called for an enormous inquiry

What are the dimensions of the universe and what many wonders are waiting to be discovered?

When you lie awake what does your troubled mind think? Do you count sheep? Do you correct yesterday’s blunders? Do you breathe in, count to four, breathe out, count four more?

My partly hormonal but mostly psychological insomnia worsened eight months into the pandemic. I stared at the ceiling wondering whether the new masked, sanitized, toilet paper hoarding lifestyle would be our new abnormal. Tallying wooly livestock didn’t lull me to sleep, toilet paper was out of stock, and the fiascos that needed fixing were out of (my) control. Yet I continued to respire —
